Welcome to the Chair of Animal Breeding

Mission of Animal Breeding and Animal Breeding Research

Selective breeding is essential for sustainably enhancing the efficiency of animal-based food and fibre production. Within the last 50 years, animal productivity has increased in a historically unprecedented fashion, to a large extent as a result of the consequent application of population and quantitative genetic principles developed earlier in the 20th century. More recently, genomic methods have been be applied for livestock selection. It is our mission to optimize selective animal breeding based on an in depth knowledge of animal genomes, especially with regard to animal health and welfare. We want to provide means for reconciling the conflicts in fulfilling human and animal needs.
